Grampound toilet twinned with school block of toilets in Sierra Leone

On 1 April 2016, Grampound Village Hall took over from Cornwall Council the public toilet located in Grampound Recreation Ground. The hall committee is responsible for all aspects of running the facility including ensuring that it is cleaned daily. It receives an annual grant from the parish council to cover the running costs.

The committee has smartened up the toilet with a fresh coat of paint, installed baby changing facilities and a notice board with information about local facilities, and it has improved the disabled locking mechanism.

It then decided to fund raise in order to help with providing better toilet facilities in a third world country in a campaign run by toilettwinning.org and, within a few weeks, it had raised £278.

Whilst toilet facilities in Cornwall have been an item of public concern for some time, the fact is that millions of people in some third world countries have no access to proper sanitation facilities at all. This impacts particularly badly on children who may not be able to attend school because of the lack of amenities. I am delighted that the residents of Grampound responded so willingly to the appeal for funds both online and in person at Grampound Produce Market and in Grampound Community Shop. Grampound is now officially twinned with a school block of toilets in a village in Sierra Leone.”
