Buses: update from Cabinet meeting of 25 January 2012

On 25 January, the Council's Cabinet decided to increase the budget for the supported bus network in Cornwall by £1.2 million per annum for the next two years. In addition, the Council will write to the Secretary of State for Transport urging that Cornwall be allowed to be a pilot area for the introduction of a flat rate charge for concessionary pass holders. This proposal has widespread public support and would provide a useful source of additional income which could ensure the future of rural bus services.

The full report that was considered by the Cabinet can be viewed at Buses report.

This is really good news for Cornwall. If the Cabinet had not agreed to find this additional funding, it would have been inevitable that there would have been significant cutbacks in rural bus services.
